Overview
Wondering how to get the most value from your OECTA Health Spending Account (HSA) and your OECTA Employee Life and Health Trust (ELHT) Benefits Plan or another Plan you may have access to?
Your HSA isn’t an insured plan and doesn’t follow standard coordination of benefits rules, but it can still work alongside your OECTA ELHT Benefits Plan or insured benefits to help you maximize reimbursements on eligible expenses.
This article explains how to use your HSA with your other benefit plans, what to include when submitting your claims, and what to keep in mind.
The details
You should submit your expenses to your other Plans first, this includes your OECTA ELHT Benefits Plan. This helps you get expenses fully reimbursed and provides as much value from both benefits as possible.
Once the expense is processed and you know how much was reimbursed, you can submit the remaining amount to your HSA.
Here’s how it works:
-
Start with your other plan
Submit your expense to your other benefit plan. Once they reimburse you, check how much of the expense is still left to be reimbursed (any copays, deductibles, or amounts above your maximums). -
Submit the rest to your HSA
Go to your online Member Centre and submit the remaining amount. If the expense is eligible and within your Benefit Period and balance, you'll be reimbursed for the remaining amount. -
Include your Explanation of Benefits (EOB)
When submitting to your HSA after another plan, upload the EOB from your first reimbursement. This helps us see what was already paid and what is still outstanding. -
Submit directly to your HSA if needed
If you already know the other plan won’t reimburse the expense, or if you’ve used up your allowance, you can submit the expense straight to your HSA.
Anything else?
Here are a few important reminders:
- If your other plan reimbursed the full amount, there’s nothing to submit to your HSA.
- The total reimbursement from all plans can’t be more than the total expense amount.
- Your HSA claim must still meet all eligibility and Benefit Period requirements, even if part of the expense was already reimbursed elsewhere.
