What happens to your HSA when you're no longer eligible

Overview

You might be wondering what happens to your Health Spending Account if you become ineligible for the Plan.

Let’s break it down.

The details

Access to your Member Centre

Good news: you still have access to your Member Centre, even after you've become ineligible for the Plan. That means you can log in any time to download past claims or review your expense history.

Pro tip: Add a secondary email address to your account before you go. If you lose access to your work email, you’ll still be able to log in using the secondary one. Handy, right?

Claim submissions

You've got a 30 day grace period from when you become ineligible on the Plan to submit any final claims but only for eligible expenses you incurred while you were still eligible on the Plan.

All the usual rules still apply! Expenses need to be eligible under your Plan, and they must fall within the correct benefit period.

So, if you’ve got receipts hanging out in your bag, desk drawer, or inbox, now’s the time to submit them!

Remaining funds

Once that 30-day claim submission grace period ends, any leftover funds in your account go back to your Plan Sponsor. They can’t be transferred to you or carried over to a new plan, even if you join another one down the line.
